If you’re dealing with excessive gingival display, we may recommend a crown lengthening procedure. This treatment removes excess gum tissue and exposes more of your tooth structure. It can be performed on one tooth, several teeth or your entire gum line. Crown lengthening offers excellent cosmetic benefits, but it’s often also necessary to fit a crown or bridge or perform other restorative dental procedures.

Get in touch with Peach State Laser Periodontics & Implants today at 770-310-7822 to find out if crown lengthening is the right treatment to address your concerns and help improve your smile and health. We look forward to getting you scheduled with our periodontist, Dr. G. Eric Li.

What is crown lengthening?

The crown is the part of the tooth that is visible above the gumline. Crown lengthening is a simple surgical procedure to adjust excessive gum tissue and expose more of the tooth structure. This treatment involves removing soft tissue and a small amount of bone to increase the amount of tooth that is visible above the gum line.

Who needs crown lengthening?

We often recommend a crown lengthening procedure to…

  • Address cosmetic concerns about “short” teeth.
  • Expose cavities hidden beneath the gum line.
  • Expose fractured areas of a tooth or teeth.
  • Expose more tooth structure to fit a restoration.

Crown lengthening for restorative procedures

If a tooth is decayed, broken below the gum line or has insufficient crown height, crown lengthening may be necessary to accommodate a restoration procedure. For example, adding a crown or bridge or addressing a cavity. In these cases, crown lengthening surgery will provide more tooth structure for your dentist to work with.

Crown lengthening for gummy smile

If you suffer from a gummy smile, then you’ve probably wondered why your teeth look so “short”. Don’t worry, your teeth are the perfect size — they’re just being covered up by excess gum tissue! Crown lengthening will remove this excess gum tissue, exposing more of the tooth surface and giving you the smile you’ve always wanted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect during a crown lengthening procedure?

Before the procedure, we’ll use a local anesthetic to numb the surgical area. Typically, little to no discomfort is felt as Dr. Li reshapes the gum and bone tissue to expose more structure of your tooth or teeth. We’ll ensure you know exactly what to expect and help you remain comfortable and relaxed from start to finish.

Are you awake during crown lengthening?

This treatment is typically performed under local anesthetic, with or without IV sedation.

How long does it take gums to heal after laser gingivectomy?

We’ll make sure you know exactly what to expect and send you home with thorough post-op instructions. Following the surgery, the treated area may be a little tender, sore or swollen. Dr. Li may prescribe painkillers or antibiotics to help relieve discomfort and prevent infection. In most cases, recovery time after crown lengthening surgery is minimal. You should be able to resume your normal routine the day after your surgery.
